PREVIEWApple is lining up what multiple outlets describe as its most significant fall launch in years. The 2026 keynote is expected to headline the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, Apple's long-rumoured first foldable — the “iPhone Ultra” — and a fully redesigned Apple Watch Ultra 4. Notably, the standard iPhone 18 and new AirPods are NOT expected at this show. Everything below is rumour until Apple confirms it on stage.

THE DATE

Apple's keynote is expected on Wednesday, September 9, 2026. The usual slot would be the second Tuesday, but the preceding Monday is the US Labor Day holiday, so reporting points to Apple nudging the event to the Wednesday.

If Apple keeps its normal cadence, pre-orders would open the Friday of that week with devices on sale the following Friday — putting general availability around September 18–19. The foldable, specifically, has been tied to a September 18 on-sale date in some reports, though foldable supply could push its availability later than the rest of the line.

IPHONE 18 PRO & PRO MAX

The Pro models are the volume story. Their centrepiece is the A20 Pro chip, built on TSMC's 2nm process and expected to use a new packaging method (WMCM). Estimates put the generational gain at roughly 10–15% over the iPhone 17 range — meaningful, but this is a cycle where the chip and camera do the heavy lifting rather than the exterior design.

The front of the phone is where the visible change lands. Apple is rumoured to move to under-display Face ID for the first time, relocating part of the Face ID hardware beneath the screen. That allows the Dynamic Island to shrink dramatically, with a small punch-hole cutout for the front camera replacing the current pill. It would be the most distinctive redesign of the Pro's face since the notch gave way to the Dynamic Island.

The headline camera upgrade is a mechanical variable aperture on the main lens — a physical iris, similar to what Huawei and Samsung have shipped, that steps through an adjustable range so you control depth of field optically instead of simulating bokeh in software. The Pro is also tipped to carry Apple's second-generation in-house C2 modem.

THE IPHONE ULTRA — APPLE'S FIRST FOLDABLE

This is the reason the event matters. After years of “Apple is working on a foldable” reports, the iPhone Ultra is expected to be unveiled at this keynote, with an on-sale date reported as September 18, 2026. It runs the same A20 Pro chip as the iPhone 18 Pro.

On the hardware: reports point to a roughly 7.6-inch internal display (some say 7.8) paired with a 5.5-inch outer cover screen that's close to a normal iPhone and usable one-handed while folded. The panels are supplied exclusively by Samsung Display under a multi-year deal, using OLED tuned specifically for foldables.

The engineering flex is the hinge. Apple's design is described as a liquid-metal hinge built from aluminium and titanium, engineered to nearly eliminate the crease that plagues rival foldables — reportedly under 0.15mm deep, far less visible than Samsung's. Crease reduction has been the single biggest knock on foldables, so this is where Apple wants to differentiate.

The catch is price. Estimates cluster around a $1,999 starting point, with analysts including Ming-Chi Kuo suggesting it could land anywhere from $2,000 to $2,500 depending on configuration. That would make it comfortably the most expensive iPhone ever, positioning it as a halo device rather than a mainstream seller.

APPLE WATCH SERIES 12 & ULTRA 4

The Watch line gets its most interesting update in years. The Apple Watch Ultra 4 is tipped for its first full redesign since the original Ultra debuted in 2022 — a thinner titanium case, estimated around 15% slimmer than the Ultra 3, with a larger, brighter OLED panel reportedly supplied by LG.

Under the hood, Apple is said to be roughly doubling the sensor components, arranging around eight sensors in a ring on the back of the watch — a shift from algorithmic estimation toward more direct health measurement. Both the Series 12 and Ultra 4 are also expected to bring the first major chip upgrade in several Watch generations.

The marquee health feature is blood-pressure monitoring. Rather than cuff-grade readings, Apple is expected to offer hypertension trend alerts using the optical heart-rate sensor to flag abnormal patterns over time, building on hypertension notifications already cleared by the FDA. The expanded feature is reportedly still under FDA review, so exactly what ships — and where — may vary by region.

WHAT'S NOT COMING

Just as important for planning: the standard iPhone 18, the budget iPhone 18e and the second-generation iPhone Air are all expected to slip to spring 2027 rather than appearing in September — the first time Apple has split a numbered iPhone lineup across two windows.

On audio, don't expect new earbuds: the rumoured AirPods Ultra with cameras for Siri/AI context has reportedly been delayed to 2027 over software and supply-chain bottlenecks, and the rest of the AirPods line is considered settled. The Apple Watch SE is also not expected to be refreshed this year.

HOW WE RATE IT

The event itself and the core lineup (iPhone 18 Pro/Pro Max, the foldable, Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4) sit at LIKELY — they're backed by consistent, multi-outlet supply-chain reporting. Finer details — exact foldable pricing and display size, the precise on-sale dates, and the blood-pressure rollout — are POSSIBLE and depend on Apple's stage confirmation and FDA timing. We'll update this hub live as invites go out and as the keynote happens.
